Now I'm a little confused?
When you say College Station - I think Texas A&M.
When you say Oklahoma State - I think Stillwater/Cowboys.

So I'm assuming that you are from Texas (maybe College Station or around there) and have gone to school at Oklahoma State (OSU), but you haven't flown up in OK and do your training on the weekends when you visit home in Texas. Am I guessing correctly?

In any case - I'm long removed from OSU and the 'Flying Aggies', so I don't know how things are working at the aviation department now, but I had quite a few instructors who were teaching at the FBOs while being full-time students (there were 3 different FBOs offering instruction at the time. I think there is only one now).

I'm sorry for the confusion. It was someone else who posted in this thread who mentioned they went to OSU, not me. I go to texas A&M and we have a flying club here called the flying aggies (which I'm not a member of). I do most of my training when I go back home but still in Texas. So no I don't go to OSU, just a mix up!

Well that is one way to add to the confusion
I apologize Clayton.
Go Aggies! Of whichever brand you are

I went to college at Florida State, and worked on my ratings up through my CFI/CFII/MEI which I got just prior to my junior year in college.

A local FBO (no aviation program at FSU and a non-affiliated FBO) hired me as a CFI (my first day as a CFI was 9/11/01... perfect timing, haha). I made myself available 7 days a week, and they also started using me in their part 91 managed charter operation.

I graduated on time 2 years later with 1500 hours, a healthy amount of turbine multi-engine time, and was picked up by a regional shortly thereafter. Definitely the way to go!

Oh wow, that sounds like a perfect set-up to get all the requirements for an ATP straight out of college! That's my big worry, to graduate and be stuck at CFI for several years before even being able to think about turbine time, etc. Glad to know that can be done! I guess I'll just have to do some searching when the time comes.
Thanks again for all the information, everyone!

Definitely the way to go right here. If you have the motivation to do everything on the side, definitely puts you ahead of the game. I pretty much did the exact same thing, just in Texas.

You could also try doing college online while being a CFI, cuts down on the commute time. And there are plenty of accredited online colleges now, Colorado State University Global Campus being one of them.

Stay at A&M... a real college experience is priceless. I'm talking about the social side, women, drinking, sports etc. Don't feel so rushed that you skip out on some great life opportunities.

And yes, CFI on the side as an independent contractor. You set your schedule and rates.
