Question Alternate?

When Operating Ifr, A Alternate Is Required. How Do We Determine When A Certain Airport Can Be Used As A Alternate?

Remember that an IFR alternate is only required if the weather at the arrival airport is forecast to be lower than 2000' and 3SM within one hour before or after ETA. (Part 91 rules)

Some of the factors determining whether an alternate is legal to use include the forecast weather at the alternate (standard minimums are 600/2sm for airports that have a precision approach and 800/2 for non-precision approach), fuel required to travel to the alternate, and any restrictions that that particular alternate might have (as laid out in the A/FD and the approach plates).

Whether they have cheap gas, HOT line girls and a restaurant close by are just a few of my criteria. The FAA rules governing alternates are a little fuzzy to me and are therefore not considered much. If I can see to land, get the airplane stopped and find the FBO, I'm good. Perhaps a professional would want to provide more legal-eze specifics!

Thats a good way to put it.

You can put down any airport as a alternate AS LONG as the forcasted weather is VFR 1 hour before and after your ETA.

When it is below VFR then you run into the 600/2 and 800/2. Alot of airports have alternate alt mins and some are not authorized for filling as an alternate under IFR conditions.

I hope I'm right, little rusty on the IFR stuff.

To determine whether you need an alternate or not:
1 hour before, 1 hour after, 2000 foot ceilings, 3 SM vis. --- anything below that, you need one.

Airport w/ a percision appch: 600 foot ceilings, 2 SM vis.

Airport w/ a non-percision appch: 800 foot ceilings, 2 SM vis.

Landing VFR --- you must be able to decend, and maintain VFR throughout the entire approach-to-landing.

Hope this helps...

Can you file an alternate without an instrument approach without filing a composite flight plan?

yes. however, you must be able to descend from the MEA, MOCA, or minimum vector altitude and land at that airport under VFR conditions.
