So I am in the start of my flight training and I really like flying and all the aspects of aviation,however, I am having some doubts as to whether this is something I actually want to do. Is this normal for starting pilots aspiring to have an aviation career to have doubts and second thoughts or is this a sign that this career is not for me?

 

Probably not for you. Every pilot I know couldn't imagine doing anything else.

 

Just because you like flying doesn't mean you have to do it for a career.
Why can't you just enjoy flying as a hobby or as a means to a particular purpose, like volunteering or as part of a business?

On the other hand, if you are just beginning this road - it might be a little early to thrown in the towel. I know someone who was ready to give back the puppy she adopted the first night at home. Now a few years later she could hardly imagine not having the dog.

Perspective is a finicky thing.

 

It is much too early to tell. Why don't you finish your training completely, then go from there.

 

It's perfectly normal. What would be a concern is if you marched into a career entirely blind without a second thought. You're questioning yourself and your decision train, and that's a good thing.

Get through your private. See what you think.

I didn't intend to enter a career. I started flying as a civil air patrol cadet simply because I wanted to fly. The notion of turning it into a career seemed far fetched and unrealistic. I spent two years in high school making it to solo (year one), then to the private (second year). After high school, I pressed on with a commercial and began working as an aerial applicator (crop duster). Didn't bother with the instrument rating. It wasn't a course I'd planned, but you really never know where this industry will take you.

You may find another vocation that you like more. That's okay. There's nothing wrong with that. Something drew you to this world, however, so you might as well take a little time to explore it. Not just with the flight training, although good luck with that. Visit places, talk to pilots, operators. Visit air ambulance companies, freight companies, corporate departments, and talk to airline pilots. Find the flight department in your nearest large city police force, and talk to pilots there. You might be surprised where your career leads, or doesn't lead. You may find that private pilot is fine for you, and another path beckons. Nothing wrong with that at all

I say explore every avenue; if you do turn it down, at least know what you're giving up, and if you do pursue it, know what you're getting into.
