I don't actually own one since I always manage to bum... but I investigated them with a serious intent of buying and here's what I know:
*Japan Radio Co. JRC JHP-520 Nav/Com Transceiver (about $248 new) Comments: good radio
*JRC JHP-520 with Com only, has scanning capability which is nice thing to have.
Generally, ICOM are good radios but somewhat overpriced.
*ICOM IC-A5 (don't get the sport model- that means it only uses alkalines not nicads and has no headset adapter); about $249 new; has Com; does not have Nav; has sidetone; does not have scannning capability; short-body version is nice if you don't plan to use it much... it takes up less space in your bag.
*ICOM A23 small version: has Comm only; has headset adapter; about $239 new.
*Vertex VXA 700: about $379; has Ham, Broadband.
*YAESU (which is a division of Vertex): good radios by and large.
*Vertex Standard VXA-150 Com Pro V (about $229 new) does not have scanning; does not have sidetone; does not have Nav function.
Comments: get a nicad battery pack: they are cheaper and last longer than swapping out alkalines all the time.
Broadband VHF aviation is a desirable feature if you fly to the Bahamas occasionally; 2-meter vhf marine is desirable for that.
