Default Emirates upgrades

Is it likely/possible to get upgraded to business class when riding with Emirates being a crewmember with another airline?

Highly unlikely. Their own crew cannot even rest in First or a Business class when operating a flight.

Why would they want to mingle with the sponsors who make their paychecks possible when they have crew rest bunks?

Because sometimes the flight depart at the wrong time. For example, 830am departure to the US. All 3 or 4 pilots are well rested so it is impossible to sleep at that time. Some may wish to eat their meal on those empty seat or even to watch a movie before going to the bunk.

In my 5 years at EK I have seen it happen once. Its 99% up to the purser and they will not want to risk any repercussion... because they are not supposed to ever upgrade people(unless Dubai sends them a message telling them to).

Never met an Emirates pilot that claimed they were “well rested”...ever!

Seems like a nasty company to me.

What I meant was they had 3 days off before the long haul flight and with the flight depart at 8am local, they would have had some good sleep therefore can't really go to the bunk again a few hours after they have woke up.
