Cathay question?

Does anyone know if an American pilot who gets hired there can bid the Vancouver base? What are the schedules like on the freighter side? How long to hold Chicago, or Vancouver if possible?

I'm no CX expert, but have seen on PPrune and other places that CX will base you wherever, but you have to have the legal right to work in "wherever", i.e., you have to be a citizen. They have bases in Paris, London, Frankfurt, etc., for nationals from those places. The only exception is Hong Kong - I think anybody can be based out of there, that's why they go through the process to get you the HK flying tickets during training. So, for your average American, my understanding is you will work out of US bases and/or HK (unless you have the legal right to work out of some other country).

That's about the size of it. Unlike NCA they do not foreign crew base, so for YVR you'd have to be able to live and work in Canada; seems odd but perhaps it makes it simpler for CX. YVR and YYZ are still bases for the mainline drivers, but I understand that you have to do your time in VHHH before you are able to pull one of those bases.

As of right now, I, as an American with no right to work anywhere else, can bid and be awarded a base in Europe. Then it is my problem of working out the details. I could simply commute across the Atlantic to go to work.
