Emirates takes delivery of 100th passenger aircraft

Dubai: Emirates Airline has received its 100th passenger aircraft, a long-range Boeing 777-300ER which brings its all wide-body fleet to a total of 111 aircraft.

Emirates’ fast-expanding fleet, which has added one new aircraft per month on average, now comprises of 53 Boeing 777s (two Boeing 777-200LRs, nine 777-200s, 12 777-300s, and 30 777-300ERs).

The airline is set to become the largest Boeing 777 operator in the world with another 45 of this aircraft type on order.

Shaikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said: “Back in 2003, when Emirates had 52 aircraft in our fleet, our plan was to grow to 100 aircraft by 2010.

"We’ve reached that mark three years early, but this is not enough. That was based on predictions that Dubai will have six million visitors by 2010.

“The new Boeing 777s will provide the backbone for our ultra long-range operations, allowing Emirates to expand our global route network and connect Dubai with non-stop flights to cities in North and South America, for instance, that were not possible before.”

Emirates’ latest Boeing 777-300ER offers eight luxurious private suites in First Class, 42 lie-flat seats in Business and can hold 304 Economy class passengers.

Emirates has 111 aircraft pending delivery, worth over $30 billion. Its order book includes: 55 Airbus A380s, 45 Boeing 777s and 11 Boeing 747 freighters.

Emirates doubles profit to record best performance

Dubai: Emirates yesterday reported a 99 per cent jump in net profits, its best performance in years, to Dh2.36 billion during the first half of the fiscal year ending September 30, compared to Dh1.18 billion for the same period last year.Part of the growth reflects a regional boom in air travel. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), passenger traffic grew 17.8 per cent in the first half of 2007 in the Middle East.However, Emirates has also thrived despite pressures facing the global airline industry. At a time when oil has reached unimaginable highs and airlines are seeing new competition, Emirates is not only a successful but a highly profitable carrier.New destinations "We have expanded our route network with new large capacity, fuel-efficient aircraft, and have continued to invest in a high quality product for our customers," said Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai City of Aviation Establishment and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates, in a news release. He added, however, that high oil prices and the credit crunch in the US made the future uncertain for global air travel. Since April, Emirates has launched passenger services to five new destinations - Venice, Newcastle, Sao Paulo, Toronto and Ahmedabad - bringing its global network to 97 cities on six continents, including 10 cargo-only destinations. The airline will soon commence operations to Houston from December 3.

DUBAI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Dubai-based airline Emirates [EMAIR.UL] picked the Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) A350 airliner over Boeing's (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) 787 in orders potentially worth $35 billion on Sunday, grabbing centre stage on the first day of the Dubai Air Show.

Deals this week could make 2007 the biggest year in history for planemakers as soaring crude oil prices drive orders for new, more fuel efficient airliners such as the A380 superjumbo and Boeing's mid-sized 787 Dreamliner.

The Gulf's biggest airline bought 70 A350s and took options on 50 more while extending its lead as the biggest buyer of the Airbus A380 superjumbo by adding another 11.

Emirates' orders included 12 long-range 777-300ERs from Boeing Co (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) worth $3.2 billion.

The industry is in the third year of a record level of demand spurred by new aircraft as well as the spread of budget airlines.

Boeing's biggest deal came from Qatar Airways, which ordered 30 787s and options to buy 30 more.

It also bought 27 777s and took five options.

Boeing entered the air show leading Airbus in their annual race for orders but the gap narrowed on Sunday.

While the 787 is already the fastest-selling new Boeing in history, the Emirates order for the A350 XWB (Xtra Wide Body) is a major boost for the new Airbus plane, which has been the subject of fitful design changes over the last two years.

The battle between the 787 and A350 for sales to industry heavyweight Emirates was being closely watched by industry analysts.

"The 787-9 is a smaller aircraft with fewer seats," said Tim Clark, Emirates airline president, explaining the decision to go with the Airbus.

"The 10 is just not being offered," he said, referring to a stretched version of the 787 which some airlines have urged Boeing to launch.

Separately Rolls-Royce (RR.L: Quote, Profile, Research) said it would supply engines for the A350s in a deal that could be worth $8.4 billon if Emirates firms all options.

Meanwhile Brazilian planemaker Embraer (EMBR3.SA: Quote, Profile, Research) (ERJ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) announced an order for 10 aircraft from Virgin Nigeria and for 19 business jets from Globalia of Spain and Falcon Aviation.

And United Technologies Corp (UTX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) unit Sikorsky signed a deal for 40 helicopters from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior.

The air show runs until Thursday.

man theyre growing like crazy. i dont think even unofficially at 3500 hours total time theyre going to find enough pilots. whats next, 2500?

Apparently 'what's next' is dropping the 2000 hours jet transport requirement. Personally, I think that's a good idea. I didn't become a better pilot just because I started flying with fans that were inducted.

I think EK would get more applicants if they had bases overseas (similar to CX, KAL)

I think a US or N American base somewhere is the simple, common sense answer to their staffing problem (and therefore the reason management will never choose it). There are thousands of pilots in the US and Canada that currently meet their requirements who just don't want to relocate the family halfway around the world.

Sounds like they are getting more desperate for pilots now. I think it will get worse for them for quite a while. I am anxiously awaiting reports from my buddy, who leaves for Dubai this month.
