Okay,

I am going to be straight up here. I have been a pilot with a US "regional" for just over five years. I have a stellar record with the company. I meet and or exceed all the requirements that EK is currently posting for flight crew. The problem is that in 1996, I made a very, very stupid decision, and drove when I should not have after having a few drinks. End result, DUI. You guys can flame and bash me all you want.. I know, it was stupid, and there is nothing that you can say that I haven't already said to myself, or punished myself over and over again. I learned my lesson. I had no issued before this incident, nor any after this incident. No speeding tickets, nothing else on my record. I have lived on a straight and narrow path, since then.

My question is this for anyone familiar with the EK hiring practices, or any EK pilots who might peruse this board. Will a DUI almost 14 years ago play a factor in a EK decision to hire?

As I mentioned, I have a completely clean record other than this one blemish. I have nearly 6500 hours of TT. About 4500 of that is in the regional jet that I fly. 450 of that is Tubine PIC, was displaced back to the right seat due to furloughs.

I had heard a while back the EK takes a rather dim view on even the slightest blemish on a record. Of course a DUI is a fairly big deal. so I am wondering if anyone can shed light on whether this is a deal breaker for me. I am hoping that the fact that many years have passed since my incident, and the fact that I have a stellar record in all other areas will negate the one blemish.

Any advice or helpful comments or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Can't speak for EK specifically but I suspect they aren't much different than any Legacy.

No question, a DUI is a serious blemish and I suspect in the current Job Market (more Pilots than jobs) it could very well be an automatic disqualification for consideration.

That being said, Let them be the ones who tell you NO.

I wouldn't volunteer it up front but if they ask you about it, it always pays to be honest. Have your answer ready and let the chips fall where they may.

Run a background check on yourself. The event in question may have been erased from your record.

the problem with not volunteering that information is that they don't catch it with the background check, you resign your current job, report for training, pass training, hit the line, and fly to a pain in the a$$ country like Canada or Australia where they check as far back as 15-20 years.

I flew into Halifax back in 2002, they wouldn't let te F/A overnight because she had a DUI, they shipped her back to the States..... she got the union involved, there is no Union at EK.

Remember where you are applying. Alcohol is actually Illegal for muslims to drink it that country.

I think it will be looked at VERY VERY VERY badly.

That is not true. Alcohol is legal in the UAE and Dubai is probably the most liberal out of the all of the Emirates.

Dry countries Kuwait and Saudia Yemen, but the rest they alllllllllllllllllll drink even Muslims, heck...... they drink more than we do!

Honestly...I believe is no big issue, as long as you come clean, and that you have learn from your mistakes. Anyhow, they are in desperate need!

I never stated that they were dry countries and alcohol wasn't around. What I did say was that it is ILLEGAL for MUSLIMS to drink in the UAE. And as an airline ran by muslims I think it won't be looked at very favorably.

FWIW, I love the UAE and would move there in a heart beat.

I suspect in the current Job Market (more Pilots than jobs)...while that is true, worldwide, right now EK is having a very difficult time finding enough pilots, and it will be getting worse and worse for them, month-by-month, so it will be easier and easier to get in there. I don't remember what they ask as far as convictions/DUIs in the application,

Foreign carriers usually require a background check, local police report, and sometimes a FBI report. While the local police and FBI reports may not show any DUIs if out of their jurisdiction, more than likely it will appear on the DMV section of the background check as it may it would be listed in the national registry.

I don’t know how long a DUI will be posted on the national registry, however when in doubt run a background check on yourself.

It’s not a bad idea to run a background check on one’s self to ensure all information is correct ranging from previous addresses, to credit history, civil actions and what not.
