Suggest everyone read the threads on PPRUNE regarding India and the attempts to replace expats with local pilots.

I believe the newspaper article will be made crystal clear.;)

Funny, for the first ten years of my life I landed airplanes, sometimes in nasty Canadian winter weather, with no centerline guidance (YXE, YQR, YTH, YLW, back then YEG and YYC, not sure about now). For the first four years of my life I landed in arctic and northern Canadian strips at night without papi/vasi, sometimes with just flare-pots. The latter is a bit of work in a black hole, but lot's of pilots do it daily.

Anyway, I'm no Chuck Yeager, and I am assuming a whole heap of other pilots have flown out of Mumbai during the shut down. Considering it was notamed, and the dude managed to hit both sides of the runway (hey, why not make it even eh), I'd be curious to know what airline this was.

"There is still a chance of overshooting the runway without the centre line lighting", this from an AI commander (remember, the chief flight attendant is the Captain at AI). Gime a break.

Another airline to add to my own no-fly list.

i think it was Blue Dart.
Cargo hauler and part owned by DHL.

Ahhh, OK then, I just have to worry about my overnight packages. Whew. . .

So has anybody actually confirmed that this incident actually happened at night?

I don't know... pretty long stretch to say that you can't see the centerline stripe... even at night. In another report it was stated that upon post flight inspection in Bangalore, glass and metal parts were found in the vacinicty of the wheel well that did not appear to be part of the aircraft:):D:rolleyes:.

Many (but by no means all) of the younger fellows I flew with over there had a great deal of trouble tracking centerline - lights or no lights. Nothing that couldn't be handled from the left seat, but I have never seen it anywhere else. They wouldn't necessarily lose control, though, at least not to this extent.

You've seen the story from last month about the AI skipper going to the toilt to return to the flight deck, not with any ease as the FO wouldn't open the door, to find the airplane more than 20 deg nose down and mach .88. . .

Perhaps the local DGAC needs to revisit their training/checking procedures. Maybe not, maybe just random problems, but it doesn't sound good.

What would we do without centerline lights
Here's a good read and does anyone know what happened to this crew after the fact ?
