Your body needs to think about that twice. He is just going to lower the bar for everyone else. People with experience enough to be in the DEFO pool, should not be anywhere near to accepting those crappy terms!!!
Also, right now the icadets that dont have hkid are having trouble getting work visas, as the cadet scheme was set up for persons with hkids and apparently the hk government has a problem with this.

They will not fill those positions, they have not met the requirements this year 100%. CX have started to offer cadet program spots to guys that were previously in the hold pool for DESO. I was told that of the 40 positions offered only 3 accepted the position. If they had enough cadet applications why would they offer these positions to DESOs applicants?

The only reason they have offered the cadet positions to DESO applicants is because they know it is highly unlikely that they will ever need to hire DESO candidates again. Why should they when they can get cadets without housing instead.
CX probably felt it was a nice gesture to offer the DESOs in the pool a job since they know they will never be offered a DESO position.
You may ask why they still have DESO & DEFO listed on their website - Well, CX likes to keep all options open.

Hi!
My buddy is expat, and in the pool for direct entry FO. He is now considering DE SO, as the FO slots seem not to be forthcoming. The big problem with DE SO (or Cadet, apparently) is no paid housing in HKG, and HKG is VERY expensive. It is also REALLY cool (except for the air pollution-no EPA in China).

If your buddy has been in the pool longer than 2 years he will have to re-interview when they start hiring again.
Everyone else,
With the record profits that we have and will be posting we will grow, that is what ALL profitable companies do... they grow. I am willing to bet that in 10 years we will have 200 planes and in 15 we will have between 250-300.

Here is my suggestion. Go to Air Whiskey and get 1-2000 hours in the right seat while updating your app consistently at CX. If CX starts hiring SOs with full housing again, go for it. I wouldn't, for a minute, consider this expat cadet program going on right now. I agree with the other guys that good things are on the horizon in terms of growth, etc. However, the current terms and conditions for hiring quite frankly suck. If you get into the left seat and get your 1000 hours and CX happen to be offering FO positions, go for it. I wouldn't take an SO job with that experience. Also, if you are willing to live in "The Sandpit", Emirates is a pretty good option right now... that is if Dubai doesn't implode altogether.
