I was a check airman for 10 years and rolled 2+2+1 on more than one occasion. I always had an extra mini stick of degree in my travel bag.

At EK the work rules are very different than the USA. Two pilot crews can be used for flights as long as 10 hours in some circumstances. Duty time is often the determining factor, not flight time. Duty time limits are driven by the start time of the duty; whether one is acclimatized to the time zone; the number of sectors to be flown; and the length of the sectors.

That all said, EK use two pilots for flights up to 9-10 hours then 3 pilots for flights up to 13 -14 hours and 4 pilots for flights over 13-14. A 3 pilot crew is 1 Captain and 2 First Officers. A 4 pilot crew is 2 Captains and 2 First Officers.

Isn't that extremely fatiguing for a 2 pilot crew on a 10 hour flight?

Choice a) One 10-hrs long sector with an FDP of 12 hours followed by at least 12 hrs rest.

Choice b) Six 1-hr long sectors with an FDP of 14 hours followed by 8 hrs rest.

I'll take 'a' every time.

We can go to 12 hours with 2 guys in Japan. And yes, it is, especially when you don't get acclimated to the local time and get a full nights sleep the night before.

What does a type rating have to do with the 'bar'? Most expat pilots (with permanent employment, not contract), regardless of rank, make as much as domestic USA narrow body captains.

All of our F/O's are type rated...on the B744, we staff as below:

up to 8 hours...1 CA and 1 FO
8 - 12 hours...1 CA and 2 FOs
> 12 hours...1 CA and 3 FOs.

However, in almost 2 years on the 400, I have only flown 2-3 sectors with just 2 pilots, even on flights less than 8 hours, due to our rest, duty, flight time, etc in our CBA. Flights like ANC to ORD, FRA to DXB, BKK to PVG, etc are staffed with 1 CA and 2 FOs.

And many times, on ULH flights I have been the only FO. because of availability of rested FOs in the right places.
