Surprisingly there’s not much posted here regarding EY. If there are any Etihad pilots here would you recommend EY over EK or QR? Why or why not?

Just from what I've heard talking to guys that work at two (EY EK) out of the three, there are guys that have left EY and QR to go to EK. EK has more financial benefits (Provident fund, yearly bonuses, etc...) and you don't have to live in Doha or Abu Dhabi. I've been to Abu Dhabi and thought it wasn't that bad looking, more green and less artificial than Dubai, but I say that living in Dubai which most seem to prefer. Never spent anytime in Doha besides on a turnaround, but reading on pprune I get the feeling it wouldn't be a nice place to live...... Just my $.02, I'd go to EY as they have lots of planes on order and are still small compared to EK. Yes there will be growing pains at EY, but it seems like upgrade would be faster. At the end of the day all middle east airlines have the same problems: DECs, flexible contracts, and variable living conditions. Get what you can in as short as time as possible and move back to your home country.........

A lot of that may have to do with one of two key points:

1) Etihad has a policy to only hire typed and current drivers onto either Airbus or Boeing fleet. The few exceptions being their cadet program which is primarily reserved for local youths, and at times they hire 73/75/76 onto the 777 fleet, but with substantial experience (i.e. running out and getting a cheap 737-200 type rating will not put you in the running). Because of this, recruitment from North America is low, as unless there are recently furloughed pilots from the majors, there's are many typed AND current big iron drivers in the US looking to leave, and at present there isn't a portal for regional jet guys like some of the other gulf airlines.

2) On one of the other web boards, Etihad lawyers forced the site to hand over personal information of those they felt posted slanderous and untrue information about the company, prompting many to stop posting altogether.

If you have specific questions about the airline, the package, or lifestyle I will be happy to answer them.. but as for a "which is better" type response, I think that's a little too subjective to warrant a detailed response.

Generally EY felt that the posts were slanderous or untrue but were in fact quite accurate. The result was that with the threat of subpoenas EY pilots have mostly kept a low profile.
In my previous company, when we were about to be terminated and needed to find a new home, there were two first choices EY and EK with QR as a distant third choice. I chose EY as it was a new company and as a DEC I felt there would be less hassles with the guys already on the property.
As far as the two cities, never lived in DBX but I like AUH very much, it's less hectic, more green and has a laid back attitude. Even though it's the capital and supposed to be more conservative, they do tend to leave us expats alone as long as we don't rock the boat. I had my girl friend live in for two years without any problems (were now married).
Once the doors are closed and you leave base it's a great place to work. On the flights I've done we do a lot of socializing when on layovers. Some have different experiences but that is how its been with me. The routes are varied and interesting especially on the wide bodies. In a month I generally do two or three Australian or North American trips with a mix of European or Asia flights.

Are there any talks of hiring non type rated pilots in the future? The rj I fly now is too small for Emirates, and although I have spent some time in Doha when on study abroad, it is defiantly not my first choice place to live in the gulf.

I would venture to say no. Several World Airways pilot that are facing furloughs or downgrades have been communicating with EY. Years of MD-11 time and they were politely told no way.

The World Fo's stand a better chance. EY does not hire captains to fill vacancies into the right seat. They had some problems in the past with ex captains who could not adjust to playing second fiddle.

I interviewed for a FO position recently and I made it through the 3 day selection. I was informed via email later that this did not mean I would definitely be offered a position with the airline. Since then, I have been waiting for the airline to get back to me.

In the meantime, I have some questions I hope some forum members may be able to help me with.

How long can it typically take to get a contract offer after successfully completing the 3 day selection?

How is the training in Etihad? I have read on another forum that FO's are only allowed to land in a Cat A airfield, is that true? Also, that FO's are not allowed to taxi? How is the simulator training?

Are all Pilots bonded for a number of years? Are internal transfers/upgrades also bonded?

How is the rostering system, does it work, i.e., do you get what you bid for?

If I was to join the company, and I wanted to move from the Airbus fleet to Boeing, how long would I have to typically wait?

Are they hiring non rated guys? the words on the street is that only Type Rated pilots with time on type will be interviewed.

Could someone confirm this.
