Controlled rest,

SQ Cargo is actually one of the best kept secret in the industry. For just flying 50 hours per month you will get around 12000 USD exclusive of the per diem and the 13 month basics plus the profit share( they do pay a profit share despite making a loss in cargo division) and this is a local term. According to APC site, a senior UAL 744 capt with 190 per hour will required to fly 63 hours to get 12000 USD.

Talked to those that flies for them..you will be surprised that most actually loved it.

We had a pilot return here from SQ cargo (was here, then went there and he is back) he liked it quite a bit, SIN is a great home base (although very expensive) the only reason as to why he chose to come back was the fact that the rosters at SQ cargo are changing constantly, there is very little consistency in your monthly schedule, the money is less than what we make here but not too bad compared to KAL for example, overall not a bad gig according to him and another captain I know that worked there for a while.

I cracked up reading your long write-up on contract pilots. Mostly because it is spot-on.

For anyone thinking of contract work, I would re-read this 5 times. If you are young and want to do it, read it 20 times. When you change companies, you also change SOP's etc. When you change countries, you also change culture.

You get paid to fly the airplane you are in, safely, using their SOP's, That is all. You also need to try to get along in their culture as best you can. But they are signing your paychecks, so it is their show.

If you can fly an airplane for 3 hours without uttering one of the following statements, contract flying might be good for you. If not, maybe not so much.

Why?
This is the way we did it at my last airline.
I am an instructor and this is how it is supposed to be done.
I am going to call in sick next time they give me this trip.
I am going to email the flight department to tell them how it is supposed to be done.

I have 13 years at a US legacy carrier, and now 4 years at two contracts in Asia. I am treated far better, with dignity and respect every day, than i ever was back home.

I would not consider going back unless I have too.

Good advice guys. Probe, did you get furloughed and then try out the foreign work, or did you go over there by choice and resign from your legacy?

I'm currently doing the Middle East thing, but would like to transition over to Asia.

Also, pay is good considering the living cost in Asia. Places like Singapore could be very expensive to live but one can have a decent lifestyle and standard of living on Captain's salary.

I dont know your situation in the sandbox. I actually dont like to make any recommendation to any individual, as i dont know what they want. We are all a bit different, and have different personal situations.

Dominicans write up was awesome. I have already saved it to send to others that pmail me about contract flying.

So far I love the contract world. My world is the one i build, not the stupidity matrix some pilot union makes me live in. I am far happier working contracts than I ever was as an ALPA represented pilot.

I wont go back unless I have to.
