Fractionals and pilot age.

Okay, for you fractional pilots:

As I understand it, none of the fractionals operating under Part 91, 91K, or part 135 impose any sort of age limits on their pilots once hired. Pilots just have to pass a first class physical and their sim checks and they can keep working forever.

Three questions:

1. What's the oldest active pilot you have actually flown with (not just heard about)?

2. Does your fractional company have an "unwritten policy" of getting rid of old pilots based on age/competency/or other criterion?

3. Is there any monetary incentive for an older pilot to quit? (I.E. retirement, or severance package.)

Thanks!

(and....no, I'm not old. just wondering.)

HR and my better judgement told me not to answer that.

Now if you had asked if there are some pilots who should retire...I would say "yes".

1. 77 and he should have quit at 57 but hated his wife
2. No. They like the old farts around because it raises their average flight hours logged stat and don't want to get sued for age discrimination. They hired a retired US air guy last year
3. No

Though there is no age limit, it's pretty tough to get hired after you wind up your 121 career these days. In the past it was not uncommon, but they prefer young copilot to offset the "experienced" PICs.

73, he was a retired Delta guy, sharp as a tack, and I was shocked when I found out how old he was, he flew F-4's in the Nam, great stick, and good guy to have a beer with too, he has great genes, and will leave when it's his time I reckon, that's his choice, his business, it's really no one else's.

Netjets currently has over 700 pilots over the age of 65. Flight Options has several as well.
