DEN

Moving to DEN in a few months and curious about all things DEN related. How long to get (and where I'd likely be sent before DEN), how long to hold a line, quality of flying, I'll take any information at all regarding it. TIA!

Aero1900 11-02-2022 12:32 PM

DEN FO is attainable.
DEN CA is not.

How soon after training? And how long to hold a line? Is flying on reserve "easy" to do as in pick up trips on reserve days, fly on off days if not called, etc

DEN FOs are really senior.... CA is even more senior. If you plan on being here for 18+ years, then you might be able to hold DEN as a CA.

No need to exaggerate. Just 16 years and 11 months.

Most junior FO is somewhere around 12 months. The rest of the info is on FFTpilots.com.

I mean 13 months isn't that big of an exaggeration....

Within 6 months on the 737 or 320.
CA upgrade was recently around 5 years on the 737. Closer to a year and 500 United hours currently.
TK instructor cherry picking flying right off probation.

Don't come to F9 for DEN. That is all. Quality of flying? F9 focuses on red eyes and 1-2 day trips.

Half agree, half disagree.

Frontier does have expansion plans in DEN. They did sign a long term agreement with the airport. And the flying in DEN is not bad at all. The only problem is the seniority on the CA side. If you are happy being an FO, there's nothing wrong with DEN

6+ years to be above 50% on the FO list in DEN.

Hell at this point I would still be worried about red eyes had I still been based there.

Let's hope they don't shrink it any further than they already did.

Yeah. I'm assuming Denver grows again in the future. If I'm wrong, then i take back what i said

PositiveRate20 11-07-2022 02:42 PM

If QOL matters to you and being in Denver is your priority, F9 is probably not a good choice.

DEN grown is a lie by management in the hopes that people won't jump ship. All the good flying out of DEN is done by crews in other bases (like long leg east coast turns). Otherwise its 6 leg, 2 days or redeyes to FL.

The quality of flying in DEN has probably decreased. It's also constantly changing too.

But the Frontier and DEN did sign a long term agreement for more gates. That's a fact not a lie

The whole airport is a joke. Pena remains a 2 lane nightmare that is packed all day, took me near 30 minutes to make it to I70 at 11am. I guess the city has no plans to add lanes. Lines at concessions are horrid. Trains stop at midnight still and are down to 1 track. No plans to add deice pads. Every other major airport in the country has a streamlined rental car pickup, but DEN has each company run thousands of buses each day wasting huge amounts of diesel. I could go on.

The airport is run by incompetent fools.

Salukipilot4590 11-12-2022 07:21 AM

Don’t forget the escalators and walkways!!!

BiffleBalls 11-12-2022 07:28 AM

Or the fact that the exhaust fans in every bathroom are either not turned on or died years ago. Nasty.

Okay I’ve wondered about this for a long time. About a year ago at my current company, flew in for the layover but incredibly late. Landed around 1am. Had to adjust show time, etc. Got down to the train, nothing running. Of course. We remembered there was a bridge to the main building, so thankfully we were parking at A something and we eventually got to the curb to find a taxi.

so the trains really stop every night? What happens if you’re out at B and C?

I welcome you to Phoenix Sky Harbor, America’s Friendliest™ America’s Tastiest Airport™. Similar problem. Some master plan for the sky train to go out to the rental car center. They shut the train down every night at 10pm for “testing,” which has been occurring for about a year and a half now. No end in sight. At times, the entire curb for rental car looks like a Disneyland queue.

ReserveCA 11-12-2022 12:21 PM

Wow
all those pretty new gates on the west end of A are UNITED……..
twice the # on A than Frontier!,🤭🤭🤭🤭

And about 100 homeless living in every corner of the upper mezzanines. Oh and don't forget about the 20 cars and catalytic converters that somehow get stolen everyday under the top notch airport security systems. Almost third world!

It was state of the art when it opened in 1995. It was in the Boonies and way too big for its time then. I recall flying in there 97/98 and it wasn’t too busy. It just has not kept up with times.

Unfortunately it seems to be a common trend in this country with infrastructure not keeping up with demand.

Planedrive 11-12-2022 03:38 PM

If you want to be Denver based I would recommend United. We have mid level seniority captains jumping ship for the Denver base currently.

Newest rumor is a San Juan base, can I interest you in some hurricanes and mofongo?

Crime rate is about the same, maybe better in SJU, but no federal income tax would be a huge plus.

Heard from a very reliable source…….. DEN will shrink again to fill DFW

So it’s safe to say DFW will be more senior than MCO?

Xdashdriver 11-13-2022 12:05 PM

Not necessarily. DEN displacees seem to like going to MCO.

When has Denver not shrunk to open a base?

Definitely PHL and LAS, probably MCO as well.

You don't think there will be enough TX dwellers to fill DFW? Seems like there are a lot of commuters from the area.

No one said anything about involuntary displacement. Some pilots based in DEN likely will bid DFW, but the poster spreading the DEN shrinkage rumor was just saying the empty spaces they leave behind may not be filled, leaving it a smaller base after the bid.

You're right. Poor assumption on my part.

When I think of a base shrinking I think of it in terms of a reduction in the number of positions, usually meaning there will be displacements. Not too many want to bid out of DEN unless they’re just sick of reserve and looking for a line. Certainly on the Captain side, with the number of DEN dwellers that got kicked out in past reductions, I cannot imagine a world where there would be unfilled positions in DEN.

Yes, you’re correct. I described a displacement vacancy without calling it such. The company can run a displacement bid and still see no one pushed out of a base involuntarily.
