Flat Earthers...

So twice now I've been asked by passengers while I'm at work whether or not the Earth is actually flat.. Maybe its the new basic economy fares bringing a different crowd, but in both cases it was twenty-something year old men who appeared to have poor hygiene, none the less how would you explain to someone that the Earth is actually a sphere without laughing and calling them a moron? Keeping it professional of course =)

Best I came up with was pointing out that all the other planets, moons, and stars appear as circles if you look at them through telescopes. And the only way that works is if they are all spheres, because flat discs would be at all random angles and some would appear as flat lines. So if they are all spheres then why aren't we?

Anyway.. Nobody ever went over how to prove the Earth was round in ground school so curious if anyone else has a clever explanation? Has anyone else run in to the same question from pax?

SpeedyVagabond 05-28-2017 11:39 AM

Not much of a surpise. If they can convince themselves that the Earth is only six thousand years old or that adding CO2 to a closed system doesn't in fact explain the easily discerned changes which are taking place, then it's not much of a reach for them to look out the window and declare the Earth flat. I simply don't interact with such types. I just smile and say hello and move along.

You can't.

As The Vagabond alluded to, fully a third of this country believes a literal interpretation of the Bible (as in the Earth is 6000 years old and Adam and Eve were real.)

People would rather watch "Dancing with the Stars" than "Cosmos."

This is directly contributing to increased wealth inequality in this country as the scientifically educated are increasingly becoming the haves in the new knowledge economy while every else works in retail and fast food.

We are quickly becoming a scientifically illiterate nation. And apparently we're content with it.

Now, when is "Celebrity Chef" on?

Yeah, well then where did Xi throw the bottle?

Wait, what?! The earth is round?

I blame the liberalization of marijuana laws for this.

While in Hawaii, overheard a guy ask the tour guide if the Hawaiian Islands were anchored to the sea floor with a gigantic chain. The guy was dead serious. Can't make this stuff up. Reverse Darwinism at its best.

Yeah? Well Representative Hank Johnson, a member of the US Congress told an admiral this regarding Guam: "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize." And he was caught on VIDEO saying this.

qball 05-28-2017 12:44 PM

Don't you think maybe he was joking?

You watch the video and tell me if he was joking during the Congressional hearing.

qball 05-28-2017 12:49 PM

Well. Send me a link.
Besides, everyone know and island would have to be a lot small than Guam to tip over. Especially if the chain to the bottom isn't really tight.

Google "Guam tipping over."

qball 05-28-2017 12:58 PM

Ok. He ain't kidding. Must have gone to the same school as Maxine Waters

Probably thinks the Earth is round too😜

Gjn290 05-28-2017 01:05 PM

What you should've told him was, he should be more concerned with the chemtrails the ticket he purchased allowed to be sprayed.

StrykerB21 05-28-2017 01:08 PM

I once made the mistake of trying to explain contrails to a guy wanting to know about that white smoke we spray out the back. After I realized he wasnt getting it I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep.

Ships at Sea

It was always explained to me viewing through a telescope the ships out at sea were appearing as though they were submerged and slowly rising as they approached the port.

Captains were asked if they were submerged or were doing anything strange. Nope.

The only explanations were either the curvature of the earth (use one hand curved and the other as though it was the ship coming in towards them) or the Martians kidnapped them. Don't get me started as to which is correct. If they ascribe to the second theory, tell them to ask the next little green man they see at the airport.

I was asked the flat earth question for the first time last year. The passenger was one of the last off and she hinted while asking me, that she knew I was going to give her the correct answer, that the earth is flat.

After I laughed a little awaiting the punchline (there was none) I realized she was not joking and said, no the world is round.

She rolled her eyes and said, in slight exasperation, "okay then.." and began to trudge up the jetway.

I said "where are the edges??" and as she continued up with no acknowledgement, I reminded myself of an important fact: "you've done nothing when you've bested a fool."

I found the edge. It's near Cleveland.

An associate of mine tried to get me into this cult like "Flat Earther" thing. It's a blossoming movement and for the life of me I can't figure out why.

I thought it was a group that was being sarcastic or anti-establishment, nope... dead serious.

Big gaggle over at Delta I.T.

FMGEC 05-28-2017 07:32 PM

These people are proof of the "Samer Theory". Just look at this one...

Woman 'marries' train station she's loved for 36 years - The Kemi Akinjare Blog

The Samer Theory holds that radiation from microwaves, telecommunications, remote controls, Bluetooth devices, etc. are slowly cooking our brains and making us crazy.

I dont mind the flat earth people.
Its the ones that look like this you have to worry about...

Wow. The ones that "look" like this? Misogynistic or racist?

Neither. You missed the point.

Wow. Is it possible to criticize politicians without the race or gender card being played? Grow up.

I'm not the one that needs to grow up. If you're going to criticize someone's idealogy and thoughts then do so. But that has nothing to do with "looks." Words have meaning. What he wrote wasn't ambigous to me.

AceyCandler 05-29-2017 03:44 AM

Easiest evidence against the Flat Earth Theory I've come up with and an easy one to explain to the passengers:

When we're south of the Equator on a layover and go outside, the constellations in the sky appear Upside-Down to what we normally see here in the US.

Then again, I would be surprised if these flat earthers knew what a constellation was. :(

If you pass through Parma, just outside of Cleveland, you will find that you pass through a time warp into the 80's.

You completely miss the point and it seems deliberate so you can stand on whatever self righteousness you think you have. Either that or youre just dense.

Seriously.

I'm sure if it had been a pic of a white politician @thevagabond wouldn't have assume the poster was a person of color and called them out for racism also.

I think it's self righteousness and dense both.

Didn't they say that about Barry?

ecam 05-29-2017 08:45 AM

Well this sure went downhill fast.

How about getting back on track. I was taught in chemtrail training that the flatness of the earth makes it easier to calculate your path over population centers. Weren't the rest of you?
