Default Smoking on the flight deck

I'm a reporter working on a story about smoking on airplanes. I was wondering if anyone out there has any recent experience with smoking on the flight deck, either on domestic or international flights. I'm happy to publish any quotes or tips anonymously.

Thanks!

In 18 years of airline flying I've never witnessed it. Pilots tend to be healthier than the general public.

I'd suggest PPrune. You'd get more responses from foreign -- especially Asian carriers.

Smoking on airplanes are pretty much outdated.
We did some in the 80s and the 90s.
On the freighters we go downstairs or in the back to get a nicotine fix.
On Middle East airlines there was quite a bit of smoking on the flight deck. Probably not so much these days.
Gear up, Light up was pretty common back in the day.

Thanks for the context! I think that phrase could come in handy for my story.

There are still a few pilots who smoke. But nobody has done it in airline cockpits for at least 20 years

I started in the late seventies. I had a CO who would join up at the range, as 3, with a stogie going full bore. In the eighties, it wasn’t unusual for 2 out of 3 pilots in a Boeing to be smoking. Do three hours in a Citation with a smoker!

On the 727, the outflow valves where located at the rear near the airstairs. If th3 plane has pressurization problems, maintenance would come out with a weed sprayer filled with Gunk cleaner, free up the valves from the tar and nicotine.

Not true.

Rare, and not necessarily legal, but not to the point of nobody never.
