I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I really like your tradition though.

Any way, he got his picture, I went flying, the plane caught fire and I had to bail out. All of this in less than an hour. After I got out of the Corps and flew for the airlines, I never, ever let anyone take a picture of me in or around a plane that I was about to fly. Over the years nice folks wanted my photo in the cockpit. I always said " here, put on my hat, climb in my seat and let me take your picture". Superstitious? You bettcha..no more bail outs for me.
F8s huh, I think this is the second story of that plane starting on fire causing a bail out. I would have like to fly her, last of the gunfighters,..... even if its a navy bird but dang u must be like old!! ..... say what was it like before electricity?

Being a former college baseball player ive seen a lot of weird superstitions and have had a few myself. Ive toned it down since but i still will not step on a yellow line on the ramp. The things i carry in my pockets (wallet, phone, FAA certs, etc.) always have to be facing the correct way and in the correct pocket. Last, im freaky about the number 11, so I keep a little #11 peice in my kit bag.

I always pat the plane's tail after each flight, kind of a way of saying "good dog"

When I fly I tell myself that I am here to have fun and no matter how I feel or how hard it is it is all worth it, because one day I be flying the big ones. Especially for a check ride.

I pray and ask the LORD to keep me and all others on the a/c safe; & I listen to Kenny G's cut off of the "Duotones" CD called 'Champagne'. I call it my motivation song.

It was the old jersey number, and just overall a lucky number for me.
