I heard about the coal ash problem in the southeast. Should I move to NC or stay away?

It's being remediated. As to whether more will get injected into the environment during remediation is hard to say. Might need to do some research on that to get an idea. It's been discussed in environmental circles for a long time (my interest is on the environmental radiation side, and that aspect at least is clearly negligible).

Do you have kids, or planning too? That would be a factor for me.

We have kids but would move there after they finish HS so not really a factor. Looking to get out of DFW but want to live in base. CLT is the only other viable option. Willing to drive an hour especially if SC is better.

Downsides to CLT: losing free garage parking at DFW and just learned about coal ash. Like to avoid needless cancer but not sure if this is a huge deal or not.

Upsides to CLT: better weather, closer to mountains and ocean, less people in metro area

Nicer people, nicer neighborhoods, less traffic, lots of fun stuff within a reasonable driving distance, homeless problem not out of control...

It's hot, flat, and crowded.

CLT is pretty crowded too and if you desire to live in the type of house and neighborhood that pilots tend to favor it's quite expensive as well. You'll also enjoy $12-15k per year of income tax you aren't paying in TX.

Come check it out. Everywhere has pros and cons but the grass isn't always greener.

You'll pay that in property tax and water/power bills and foundation damage repairs in Dallas.

Water and natural gas are pretty bad in CLT. Electricity seems about average. NC has personal property tax on every vehicle you own from cars to boats. Probably golf carts too but I don't have one of those. So you get to look forward to that on top of the 4.5% they take out of your paycheck.
