PORT ORANGE – A single-engine plane crashed into vacant lot just west of Atlantic High School this afternoon after it apparently ran out of gas, slightly injuring the pilot, a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said. “I was trying to find a place where I wouldn’t hurt anyone or myself," said pilot Gregory Sutliff, 75, who lives in the Spruce Creek Fly-In.
He aimed for a cleared piece of land at the southeast of the corner of Reed Canal Road and Clyde Morris Boulevard.
Port Orange police said Sutliff, who was the only one aboard, had to make an emergency landing because he ran out of fuel. The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. Sutliff was returning from Harrisburg, Pa., a trip he’s made five times before in the Flight Design CT, a two-seater which is less than a year old. Sutliff has been flying for 60 years. “Nothing is burning and there is no fuel leaking,’’ said Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught. The plane landed upside down.
Sutliff suffered cuts and bruises, but was not seriously hurt, said Haught. The investigation into the crash has been turned over to the Port Orange Police Department.
the reporter wrote the plane landed upside down (lol) more like it flipped upon landing.
My friend went snooping around and took this picture of the aftermath, the
man in the yellow hat was flying....he only had one bandage on his arm.
