Early in Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Iran supplied Russia with a weapon that became a symbol of the war: the Shahed drone. Tehran also shipped large volumes of ammunition, helping sustain Russia’s onslaught against Ukraine. However, experts say this weekend’s U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran is unlikely to affect Russia’s chances on the Ukrainian battlefield significantly. Since 2024, Moscow has grown more self-reliant, producing its own spruced-up UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) from Iranian designs — such as the Geran-2 “kamikaze” drone — at its Alabuga facility in the Republic of Tatarstan. Reports suggest Iranian missiles have more recently been used to bolster Russian stockpiles, rather than to strike Ukraine. Even as Russia has scaled up its domestic production, it has looked to North Korea and Chinese-made components to supplement its arsenal instead of Iran.
