I'm convinced that the airplane will get off the ground. I was skeptical at first, but now I get it.

I continue to believe that that plane will fly off of a conveyor belt since there is nothing keeping the plane from accellerating, but how about if we substituted wheels for floats and conveyor for river/water? Since there is more surface friction, would the plane fly?

Yes. The conveyor is only activated if the airplane indicates airspeed, which means it must be moving forward to indicate speed. Otherwise, the conveyor never moves. All that has to happen is for the plane to indicate any airspeed at all, and it will eventually generate enough speed to takeoff.

Read the second sentence very carefully. I'll highlight the important words.

An airplane does not apply thrust through its wheels, so the conveyor is nothing more than a cute (and impossibly expensive) distraction. Airplane accelerates to 60 mph, the conveyor accelerates to 60 mph in the opposite direction. (The question as posed requires that the conveyor move at the same speed, but opposite direction, as the airplane. If the airplane is stationary, then the conveyor isn't moving either.) Wheels turn at 120 mph, and the airplane flies.

The truth only hurts if it should.

That was genious....great job of thinking out of the box...but I'll give you another riddle....using this sentence: "how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" tell me what the hell a woodchuck is.

A woodchuck is a marmot (a rodent of the family of large ground squirrels) also known as a groundhog or whistlepig.

Anything else?

Never knew that. So keeping one "for domestic... Within the city limits... That's not legal, either, Dude..."

Edifying as always, sir...

Tony C, FLyerJosh. Are you guys trying to run a smoke test on your brains?

This is Dynamics 101, freshman level engineering whether you are in electrical or civil or mechanical or aero or nuclear. Everyone takes Dynamics 101. Let's change the problem to read: "A dump truck is on a conveyor belt......." Same outcome. It won't fly either.

What's wrong, Grad, did Michael boot you off FI for trolling, and now you don't have ten bucks to join up again?

I'll pitch in 50 cents.
