Essentially, you must keep any old logbooks that have endorsements because this is the only way to verify your instructors endorsments. I still have my training logbook to show evidence of training and endorsments but have since, only kept an electronic logbook. I don't use any of those expensive logbook programs on the market...they just cost to much.
hope that helps.

I use logbook pro. I like it. It was especially handy when keeping track of time in make/model while instructing. Now it's a backup to my paper log. I use it primarily to check math on my paper log. Its also handy for keeping track of 121 time limits. I fill out logbook pro from my little blue book after every trip and then do my paper log monthly.
One of the other big perks is ADPL. I have every intention of starting to use this as soon as I figure out how to get it on my blackjack. Sync it to crewtrac and keep your times in it, you automatically know all the fun stuff like 30-7 and rest limits. It will save time over putting times into logbook pro, paper and ink from printing the schedule, etc.

Warning about Safelog
Just bought Safelog for the PC and the Blackberry companion. I agree that it lends itself more to 91/135 operations, and not all of the features were available in the trial version. The sync features are not available in the trial version, and, in addition, Safelog didn't display properly on my BB Storm (that is, features that were not available in the trial version, like the reports, adding flights) and I am apparently now out the $200+ that I paid for the logbook.
James seemed very confrontational in his response to me, including their "no refund policy" written "in plain English." I had submitted a request for a refund within hours of paying for the full versions, with no response. I sent a second request a couple of days later, and then received a fairly condescending response from James. Since all of the features are not available in the trial version, it is impossible to "try it fully before you buy it." Buyer beware - unless I receive a full refund for software that clearly doesn't work, I can't recommend it. I just wish this guy would do the right thing and refund my money - I made a huge mistake buying this software, and won't do that again.

Hi!
LBPro is the best PC logbook, and the most expensive.
If you want a paper logbook, like I do, print it out whenever. I keep about 5 copies of it, in various physical places, plus email it to myself whenever, so it is always on the server.

PS-You can get cheaper elec logbooks, including free ones. Endorsements don't matter as your experience grows. If you are paranoid and new, keep your paper log with the endorsements.
Paper is WAY to easy to lose!!!!!!!

I have used Safelog for three years. It has many nice features, but it is really absurd that the software does not have any really good options to print it and make it look nice. If I had known that three years ago, I would never have bought it. When my paid period is up, I might take the plunge and switch...

Regarding saving paper logs for endorsements - I agree this is the prudent thing to do. That said, use a flatbed scanner and create PDF's of all of your endorsements and such. I printed copies of these and put them in the hardcopy of my LBP printout when I went to interviews - the interviewers loved that my logbook was a one concise, neat printed copy, with everything right there. I made it a point to tell them copies of all the endorsements were inside, and that I did have the originals if they wanted to see them (no one did, but then I'm a bit older than some of you - YMMV).
More importantly, take those same PDF files, as well as your electronic log backup files and email them yourself (I use a Hotmail account - any service that keeps messages on it's server should work). Now heaven forbid, if I have the dreaded house fire and lose all of my originals (which I should probably put in a safe deposit box), all I have to do is log onto Hotmail, download and print out my backups/PDFs, and I'm back in business (aviation-wise anyhow).

For what it's worth, on the topic of Safelog, I guess I need to re-word my original review of it. There were several functions that were not available in the "try-it-before-you-buy-it" version, specifically for the Blackberry. I paid for the full version in order to completely test the functionality, and it didn't work for squat. I contacted "Dauntless Aviation [sic]" to request a full refund, and no response. So...within hours of downloading it, testing, finding it didn't work on the Blackberry at all, I called American Express. AMEX (they rock) immediately refunded the money, and sent a chargeback notice to Dauntless. AMEX agreed that Dauntless was involved in fraudulent claims regarding the functionality of their crappy software, and had misrepresented themselves. Here is the response I received from "Adrian" (right...I think it's a one-man show, and this is the notorious 'James ATP/CFI' that people have since squawked about on Pprune) with all of the threats:
"We have recently received notice of a credit card chargeback with regards to
your order of Safelog pilot logbooks from us. This is a VERY serious
matter - the tone of the note to follow is not meant to be harsh or personally offensive but rather merely to convey the extreme seriousness of this situation.
I hope this chargeback was done in error on your part and that you will be quickly recognizing your error and paying what you are due, which is currently $214.97.
Otherwise, if you do not promptly arrange payment of the delinquent amount, we CAN AND WILL bring this to the attention of :
1. Your American Express card issuer (whose cardholder policies you are doubtlessly violating by lying - that is, claiming that we didn`t deliver something that we so obviously did, plus the fact that you explicitly agreed to the try-before-you-buy, non-refundability clauses. This may affect your ability to obtain credit in the future.
2. Your employer (****** Airlines). This may affect your current employment.
3. Credit agencies. This may affect your ability to obtain credit in the future.
Additionally, we will then forward this matter to a collection agency. You will be responsible for all costs incurred.
We are not trying to be mean or cruel, but we consider what you have done, if intentional, to be nothing short of fraud. You purchased a product from us with clear, plain English terms. You have cavalierly violated those terms simply because you feel you can. This is not fair to us and this is not fair to our other users who act honestly.
Please let`s sort this out fairly right now.
For the time being, your Safelog account has been disabled due to non-payments. It will be promptly re-activated after you pay what is due.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter."
Don't buy this software - it is junk, and the developer simply wants your money without providing any sort of service that will "make it right." This guy is from the same bloodline as Bernie Madoff...

I've been using SAFELOG for a couple of years now, and have been relatively happy with it. I love the connectivity with Google Earth and being able to "visualize" the logbook on a map. But, I must admit, after the amount of time it took me to transfer all my paper logbook data for over 4000 flights, I HAVE to like it. (I don't ever want to have to deal with that again...)
