According to Boeing's website, the 787 will be similar to the 777. However, it will require an type-rating of its own. Pilots who are type rated on the 777 will have to take only a short transition and type rating course; 75/767 pilots will have to take a slightly longer course.

There is no chance of a common type rating between the 747-8 and the 787. One of the biggest reasons is that they fly totally different. The 787-is fly-by wire. The 747...fly-by cable. (Actually, the 747-8 will be fly-by wire in the roll axis only...don't ask me why only that axis)
However, If a person is typed on the 777 it's only a 5 day transition course to get checked out in the 787. The 787 fly-by wire controlles supposedly programed to mimic the 777 flight characteristics. The flight deck will be very familiar to anyone who flies the 777, even though the mechanical systems of the two planes are very different.

Alright so how would it work for an airline like Continental? Would only 777 pilots be transitioned to 777/787 or would their be a separate 787 category, or would it be something like 757/767/787? Just curious....
