iPod, or something else?

For 50 bucks more why not just go for the 30GB ipod? You get over 3 times the space of the Zen micro and more then 7 times the space of the nano; also its battery life is 20 hours, the other two are 14 and 15 respectively.

My 2 cents worth...
I pods are overrated, and are limited to doing just one thing, play music or video.
If you truly are a "Tech Maven", I suggest you take a look at a palm device.
For about the same money, and size of the video I pod, you get an organizer, contact list, calculator, and in most cases much much more.
The newer Palm devices are becoming mini laptops, and can do almost anything a laptop can do. They are very intuitive and easy to learn how to use.
I have the Palm Tx which has wifi capability. I use it to check e-mail while on the road as well.
Oh yes, it also plays music and video. It comes with a media player that will play mp3 files and video files. The files are stored on the removable memory chip (sd card). The amount of music and video that it can hold is dictated by the size of the chip that you buy. And you can carry several of the chips around and have one for music, and say another for more music, and another for video, etc.
Try doing that with an Ipod!!

I'm not a tech maven but I loooove music. For Christmas, the love goddess gave me a SanDisk 2.0GB MP3 player. As my ears are shot- from too much music, sitting next to a fire truck engine, aurally unprotected firearms use, etc.- sound quality is not high on my list. I've got 450 songs on it, with about 30-40% more disk space to be used. Big advantage, uses a AAA battery, rechargeble or not- so I'll never be stuck on the road with a dead proprietary battery. Relatively easy to use and not the most expensive player either.

Buy an iPod!!!
If you don't, you will wind up making the same mistake as other people. You will buy some $100 mp3 player, and then you will sell it for $20 and buy an iPod.
Get the new 30gig video ipod, for $299. It is amazing.
