Default B-1 crash in Qatar

First a B2 now the B1... These things aren't cheap.... Hope the crew made it out. How many does the B1 carry?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. B-1 bomber crashed at an air base in Qatar on Friday, a U.S. defense official said, adding the cause was still unknown.

"A B-1 crashed. We're investigating," the official said.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera television earlier said the plane was a B-52. The U.S. official said it was a B-1.

The B-1 is a long-range bomber aircraft capable of flying intercontinental missions without refueling and is able to penetrate sophisticated defensive networks.

U.S. defense officials had few details on Friday's crash, saying they did not know how many people were on board or what mission the bomber was conducting.

Default B-1B Crew

The Lancer carries 4--two pilots; two navs. All have upward-firing ejection seats, unlike the B-52. It has two that go down.

Four, at least back in the day. They may have automated that down to three?

B1's are cheaper than B2's, by a long shot. But since there are no open production lines, neither airplane can be replaced.

280mil isn't anything to throw stones at. Though for it's capabilities that's probably a bargain considering the price tag on a F-22

F-22 is about 165 million, give or take. I know, I've seen the receipts at the Raptor bar in Tyndall. They put them all on one of the walls there.

B2 is like 2 billion...

Both planes were designed to do one thing, by different means: Penetrate the Voyska PVO, the air defense system of the old Soviet Union.

B1: Super-low and fast (almost M1.0 on the deck) .
B2: High, slow and stealthy

B1 can exceed M1.0 on the deck...about 900mph. Sorry I'm being a nerd.

But that's not the mission profile, right? The Soviets had sensors to detect sonic booms
