I've never worked a 121 ramp, but working on a GA ramp can bite you if you're not careful. We had one pilot of a West Wind almost run over our line guy because he was in such a hurry he couldn't follow instructions. This was after he told our manager that he doesn't do checklists because they're a waste of time.

http://www.aviationtoday.com/am/issu...cus/23029.html good article on ramp dangers. "27,000 ramp accidents and incidents occur annually worldwide and around 243,000 people are injured — about nine per 1,000 departures."

The Westwind is a fuel emergency waiting to happen, so their haste is not surprising.

I got a nice faceful of jet blast on my way to a 172 yesterday by a Citation driver who was also in a hurry...I was fifty or so feet behind the airplane and this guy stood them up to some large percentage of N1 to break away. Knocked my sunglasses off.

The 121 ramps are dangerous—GA ramps are dangerous for different reasons. A combination of student pilots plus hurrying corporate pilots, plus oft less-than-well-trained ramp handlers is a setup for disaster. Keep your head on a swivel—that's the ONLY way to prevent tragedy on the ramp.
