I think he meant to cut it close...his pitch holds constant as he approaches the bottom of the loop, he wasn't pulling for his life the whole way down. He had already dumped most of his vertical rate...he left in just VS enough to make it look exciting.

Basically he could rival Evil Knieval after that - meaning he broke nearly every bone in his body. That is of course an exaggeration - but yes he survived.

Rafale pucker factor reminded me of something I saw when I was a kid....

El Toro F-86 Accident

and no, this didn't have any sort of happy ending.
