Portable GPS ok in carry-on baggage?
I was wondering if anyone had any experience taking a portable GPS unit through TSA screening as part of carry-on baggage? I really don't want to put it in checked luggage - greater chance of it disappearing - but was curious if the TSA cretins might find it suspicious and hassle me over it. Any thoughts?

I took mine to pdx a couple weeks ago. Never had any problems. They asked what it was (they saw it on the scan), told them it was my gps, they never took it out to verify. You shouldn't have any issues.

Never had a problem with it, I've taken my whole flight bag full of crap as a carry-on several times without so much as a single question, they view a GPS the same as any other portable electronics really.

I actually took my GPS out on a flight from PBI to BOS a few years back and propped it against the window hoping for a signal. After about ten minutes or so I got a good signal. I was amazed when I saw us cruising along around 400 knots climbing through 17,000 ft. Truly incredible.
I shut it off shortly there after just to be safe and not cause concern among the PAX. Although, the GPS is a passive device that "listens" for the satellites, so I don't see any possible way it can interact with the aircraft's navigation systems - especially since I use it to navigate my own aircraft!!

I've taken mine with several times and have never been asked about it. It's not on the TSA website about being a banned item (checked the first time I took it since I didn't want to turn it over to them). It no different than carrying any other electronic device through like i-pods, dvd players, lap tops, ect...
