Teen Crime Spree
Can someone learn to fly a plane just by reading a manual or searching the Internet or fooling around on Flight Simulator?
From Seattle Times:
The elusive teenage burglar who has frustrated authorities on Camano Island for nearly a year and a half is now suspected of taking his one-man crime wave to the San Juan Islands, where he is being blamed for late-night break-ins, boat heists and even the theft of two airplanes.

"Authorities found vomit in the cockpit of the airplane that landed on the reservation and have submitted a sample to the state crime lab to determine whether Harris-Moore was behind the heist, Cumming said."
Seems like it is possible. The only thing this kid needed was some books, MS Flight?, a BIG PAIR of you know what. Maybe he should have skipped that last meal though...

Re- the vomit analysis.
I remember reading years back somewhere (can't remember where) about a King Air that a person or persons had managed to start up at night. Back east somewhere I think? The plane had been run into another object (can't remember if it was another a/c or hangar doors) and damaged severely and abandoned at the scene.
The vomit connection- The part I do remember in the account is that authorities found a soiled sock in the cockpit that the guilty party had apparently used to wipe themselves, uh, down below and aft, after apparently frightening the you know what out of themselves.
The truth is out there.
I guess.

Pretty sure its possible....

My instructor was mostly showing me proper-procedures (checklists, taxi protocol, radio protocol, safety, etc). But I fully believe that a reasonably well-read novice could take off, fly and land (in a horribly unsafe manner!!) without instruction.
I'd hate to be a passenger in that plane, but I'm not surprised he survived, and probably left the aircraft with minimal damage.

I'm a total flight sim junkie. Must have been about 5, but I still remember sneaking out of my room to play Falcon 3.0 after my parents had put me to sleep. Took my intro flight a couple years ago, and instructor let me land. Hundreds of hours with Falcon 4/X-Plane/FS2004 paid off! Do I think I could land a 737? No....but I know for sure that I'll have an edge over other students once I start primary training, and this can only mean more $$ saved in the long run.
