Sad indeed. Although at the time it probably didn't seem that way for obvious reasons. Winning the war, getting to go home to your family, not having to watch your friends lose their lives, etc.

But yeah, the image of that is enough to depress you.

Some of them. But those are usually the ones where they cut the wings off and chop the fuselage into several parts. Then we leave them out for the rooskie satellites to view.
