Not all of them do.

But this is real stuff, a certain large government agency with which I am familiar requires that all hard drives be removed and smashed to bits upon disposal of the equipment.

It's SCARY to see some of the stuff not properly disposed of comming out of my office! We got a memo on copy machines a few weeks ago. I'm afraid to do anything anymore.

We disassembled them then sanded/ground all the iron oxide off the disks....

It is the only absolutely non-reversible method of information destruction.

since the newer disks are manufactured with glass, you can just smash them.

(ask me how I know)

A handy way to destroy the data on a CD or DVD is to pop it into a microwave, shiney side up, for about five seconds. Dim the lights and enjoy the fireworks. All gone, no fuss no muss.
