As I recall, the purpose was to test an "anti-misting" additive in the fuel. It was hoped that this would reduce post-impact fires, but it obviously did not do so. Note the triangular structures which were placed so as to slice open the wing tanks. The remotely controlled aircraft did not land in the desired level attitude, and they got unintended structural damage before hitting these "can-openers". There is also a scary film taken from inside the aircraft.
