When trying to plan a career, especially in the early stages, it is difficult to predict whether or not a degree is necessary. I do not have a degree and have not needed one. I have never applied for a job and been rejected due to not having the degree box checked. That being said the jobs in aviation that I have pursued did not require a degree. It was not a situation where I was connected or lucky. I have worked for two airlines and did not especially care for the work environment. So when someone brings up the fact that Delta, American, etc. require degrees it does not matter because I have no desire to work at a major airline. To answer your question about degree requirements my answer is that it depends. If there is any chance that you want to work for a major airline you should definitely get a degree. I would also recommend a degree that is not aviation related. If on the other hand you are planning on sticking with GA then the degree is not required in my opinion.

Curious, I don't know any pilots without at least a bachelors degree...If you truly have to ask why earning a degree has any relevance, you're not in the game.

Oh, it's a game now.

That's why everyone thinks inside the box and follows the magenta line from Point A to Point B.

If I meet you in the future, which I have a sneaking suspicion I might (based on where you live in the world and because the aviation community there is tiny), you'll then know one.

You may not know me, but I'm one of those w/o a degree... yet. Which kind of says something about the industry...

I think that the degree is just one measure of follow-through and commitment that potential employers use in assessing one's potential contribution to the overall success of a company.

Family that lives there. I visit as often as I can. Might eventually end up there, depending on the work situation here in the next year or two. Then its the dreaded ATPL conversion
