jumpseat or nonrev with surboard?
Has anyone jumpseated on Horizon with a surfboard? I am going to pick up a board in California and wanted to see if I can check irregular sized items. If it doesn't work to j/s I can nonrev 2 legs on company (SKYW).
Thanks!

You should be able to check it. I would check it as a non-rev then try to J/S.
Worst case (apart from a busted plank) is that it gets there ahead of you.
Have not done it with a board, but have done it with bags.
I have carried alot of boards flying 135. Shorties are generally ok, and they are less likely to get dinged up because they are easier to handle. Get a good bag.

Its hard enough trying to get it on a company flight, let alone our mainline affiliates, but on another carrier....good luck
If you can list ahead of time that will likely help you get in the system, but I'd love to see the ticket agent's face when you roll up with a board bag.
You: Hi, I'd like to list for the jumpseat please
CS: I don't know how to do that/We don't have CASS here/Who do you work for?!?!
You: Oh and by the way, I'd like to check this.....item
I'd say your best and cheapest bet is on a company flight. If you're originating at a SkyWest station they may not charge you, but if its United or Delta, you'll likely pay anywhere from $125 to $300 (A bad personal experience with Delta in a foreign country).
Either way, good luck and enjoy your new stick!

Have you thought about FedExing the board back, most airline employees get a pretty good discount (I think 75% is the standard but it's been awhile since I used it) on shipping and it may be cheaper/less hassle than trying to check it.

It is not too bad. The biggest problem is figuring out if it will fit in the equipment used. For instance, going to mexico once I was on a A319, and the board wouldn't fit because the shape of the door, but for some reason it would fit on a 757.
What I would do is call the airline ahead of time, act like you are a paying passenger, and just talk to them about fitting your board on. They actually know what sizes fit, and what size doesn't. I have a 7'9" bonzer, and in the bag wrapped up it is about 9' long. The customer service rep on the phone could tell me which flights it would work on, and which flights it wouldn't work on.
Wrap it in bubble wrap, and towls, and hope it doesn't get dinged up

Pipe insulation works really well. I put it over the rails and then lay it over the top and bottom of the board. Then I use packing tape to make it all stick to the board. Usually it is a tight fit into a board bag but it works really well and I have not had a board dinged using this method.
