How do you think we would land on a runway without an ILS (there are many)? I don't know why it amazes people that sometimes we fly a 2-bar VASI and put the runway in the middle of the window like the "olden days." GO to all of the Youtube videos of JFK visual/VOR approaches...the comments are hilarious.

VASI? You don't need no stinking VASI. Just put three fingers up on the dash and keep the TDZ the whole way down. Works like a charm in the WSCOD

That's funny because I actually flew with a guy that freaked out because he couldn't see the VASI... bright sunny day VMC..."just put the freakin' touchdown zone in the window."

All this education on pitch pictures and awareness of visual illusions and guys are afraid to put it into practice.

I think that is pretty standard 121 policy (if there is an ILS available). Not sure if it's an OPSPEC thing or just kind of industry best practice.

But an ILS would not be as helpful on a busy charted visual like this...you are far off the LOC for most of the approach so the LOC would only be helpful as a second check on short final. But you would be pretty busy on this visual.

I remember this incident, another breakdown in communications, I'm glad Delta was paying attention. Same thing happened with Avianca 052 years ago, poor communication and limited English.
