Love Him or Hate Him

Alfred Kahn, 'Godfather' of Airline Deregulation, Dies at 93

If you or a family member has ever bought an airplane ticket for under $1,000, you probably like this guy.

If you work for an airline that has started flying in the past 30 years, you probably like this guy.

If you are in the bottom 50% of the seniority list for any airline, and you appreciate the fact that you have a job, you probably like this guy.

I know a few pilots try to argue that deregulation was bad for the aviation industry, but I just don't see it. Deregulation is the reason we have such a large and robust airline industry where almost anyone in the country can take a flight on a long distance trip, and is the reason that most of us has jobs.

Quality is more important than quantity. Flying used to be a classy affair. Pilots were well-paid and had a stable, honorable career. And I'm a young "regional" captain saying this......

Wow!
You actually believe this?

I believe it, if it was still regulated, 50% of the pilot jobs out there would not exist, esp @ the level starting @ regional onward. It would be a good old boys club, including those in the back.

I agree. Deregulation was good for most folks, but it was allowed to go to a little to far. The top 5-10% of the legacy seniority lists probably would have been better off without deregulation.

Some things need a certain level of regulation for safety, stability, or both.

Banks are regulated for stability. Nuclear power is regulated for safety.

Electrical utilities need to be regulated for stability, as California found out in 2000.

Airlines need to be regulated for both safety and stability, because you can't get safety without economic stability for the companies and employees.

the fact you think deregulation is so great is not surprising.

I just wish the FDA would deregulate the pharmaceutical industry. I have a great formula for snake oil!

FDXLAG 12-28-2010 07:14 PM

So you are saying you disagree, there would be just as many airlines/aircraft/flights today had deregulation not occured?

If you wish to debate please make a point and not an ad hominem attack.

I completely agree with this statement. I believe in a certain amount of regulation for everything. I am not one of those anti-government and anti-regulation people. It is generally a good thing in small doses.

With that said, aviation is probably the most regulated industry in the country. Look at all the laws that govern us. It's pretty insane. I believe those laws are the reason that aviation is the safest form of transportation known to man.

But I completely believe that deregulation did more good than bad for the industry.
