Thumbs down Influencing the young

Students tour airport to find future in the skies - pressofAtlanticCity.com: Atlantic County News

It is a GOOD thing to get more people - especially the young ones - interested in all aspects of aviation, but it is not a good thing to implant such notions and expectations into the impressionable minds

"Allan Tapken, a pilot with Midlantic, told the kids about his love for his profession.
"I would do it for nothing," he told his young audience. "I would pay them to let me do this."

Default This is one of the problems.

Perhaps this pilot schould lead by example and let these kids know later on how that mentallity worked out for him.
Needs to be more forthrightness about this biz so another prospective generation does'nt come away jaded.

Default That is how it starts.

I am not in favor of the young eagles program for the same reason. Why don't we give kids a taste of alcohol and crack while you are at it?

+1.0

IMO, not a lot of thought was put into the lasting effects on a young mind by making such a statement. Do it for free, pay them?

Much like many of our conversations Sky - it isn't the product but rather the delivery/message in m opinion.
There is nothing wrong with 'Young Eagles' or any other aviation related group used to encourage people into aviation. Matter of fact - as you have said in the past - you love general aviation and hate to see the demise of such. Do you really have a problem with these types of groups or the message that some portray (like the quote/message from Allan)?

Think about it. The EAA is holding out to the public for free rides for kids from pilots with all kinds of backgrounds. Some current others not. The reputation of GA is at stake every time one of those old timers takes up a plane load of kids. They are not tested or verified as to their lever of currency or skill other than an BFR and three take offs and landings in 90 days.

They should be better screened. Killing a plane load of innocent kids can do a lot of damage to aviation.

Please review the pilot's comments in the article in its intended context. I think some here might be reading too much into it. The pilot is trying to get the kids excited, of course he's going to play it up. What do you expect him to say?

As far as EAA YE - here are the qualifications, not a bunch of illegal geezers ignoring the rules initiating a plane load of kids to crash.

And that playing it up is what leaves that initial impression which leads to the 'young' pilots of today and yesterday willing to undercut and destroy what is left of the professional today. Aviation is EASY to "play up" - it is one heck of a cool job, but even starting down that road of "I'd do it for free" is the first step down the wrong path. ONLY the military piot can get away with the 'do it for free' comment because they are getting paid for being in the military and flying is just the job

You might have a problem with the organization itself Sky, but if you are against the mission as stated:
The intent of the Young Eagles demonstration
ride is to motivate young people and
provide a memorable flying experience
Well.....that is just Sky.
Trying to kill every type of aviation dream for the masses at every turn.

People who exaggerate in "playing up" or "playing down" a career are not really trying to help young people make a wise decision for themselves. They are trying to justify their own decision to follow that career or leave it, more to convince themselves than anyone else.
