An Anchorage man arrested Monday after causing a disturbance on an Alaska Airlines flight at Sea-Tac Airport has been charged with third-degree assault.

Jack A. Parlin, 38, is jailed on $50,000 following allegations that he bit one of those trying to subdue him.

In charging documents filed Wednesday, King County prosecutors claim Parlin admitted to biting the first officer of the flight during a struggle near the parked plane’s exit door.

According to charging documents, Parlin said he fought so that he would not be taken to a hospital psychiatric ward.

At 4:40 a.m., Port of Seattle police arrived at the C10 gate to find several passengers and the plane’s first officer holding Parlin face down on the floor near the aircraft galley. The first officer’s harm (sic) was bleeding due to a large, deep bite.

Speaking with passengers and crew, police were told Parlin tried to open the airplane door after the plane – having landed after flying from Anchorage – stopped at the gate.

Parlin, investigators were told, had begun acting up as the plane descended into Sea-Tac, according to charging documents. Parlin approached the front of the plane and refused to sit.

After shutting down the aircraft, the first officer heard a disturbance inside the passenger cabin and went to investigate, Port of Seattle Detective Steven Ivey told the court. He opened the door to find Parlin struggling with a flight attendant near the exit door.

Concerned that the emergency slide would deploy and injure anyone nearby if the door was opened, the first officer helped the flight attendant and several passengers in wrestling Parlin to the ground, Ivey continued. During the fight, the detective said, Parlin bit the first officer’s forearm, prompting him to punch Parlin several times in the face.

According to charging documents, the flight attendant said Parlin had been acting oddly for much of the flight. At one point, he said, Parlin claimed to know the pilots; shortly before landing, Parlin told a flight attendant he was having heart problems but declined oxygen.

Speaking with police minutes after his arrest, Parlin allegedly said he tried to reach the door because he was anxious and wanted to get off the plane. Claiming he’d been “rushed” by the passengers and crew, Parlin allegedly admitted to biting someone during the fight.

Parlin was taken to Highline Medical Center for evaluation, where he was interviewed by police.

“I asked Parlin why he bit the person,” Ivey told the court. “Parlin stated it was his ‘last ditch effort’” to avoid coming to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

Parlin has been charged with third-degree assault, a felony. He is expected to be arraigned Sept. 19 at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
