Removing posts because someone finds them offensive, abusive, or profane, limits free speech -- something every American should be against.

I find it interesting that these network news companies police their websites for offensive, abusive, and profane content, yet, they have no problems peddling the same crap to our kids on TV.

I rarely read the comments on news stories for example unless someone on APC makes mention of them, but I've read some on other YouTube videos. I am amazed at how utterly worthless a majority of the comments are and how ANY topic seems to devolve into some type of religious or political war of words mostly based on insults with little if ANY logic at all.
KC10 - I am positive that you understand that free speech limits interference from the GOVERNMENT right? I bring this up because it is an often used argument on APC when users are upset that they can't just spout out anything and everything on this site.
I often use the example of you having rules for use of language in your own house. I'm sure that you wouldn't appreciate a foul mouth sailor coming over to your house and spewing forth profanity in front of your kids (not that you would ever invite a sailor to dinner )
I think that Vagabond had a nice little (informative) write-up ready to send to those who complained about "abridging the freedom of speech" or she has written a few posts to try and explain it to some.

You can look at sites like APC and those mentioned above another way- not as barriers to freedom but as opportunities for self-expression for which to be grateful. Large sites pay large bandwidth fees so they get to decide their own rules. For example, APC could decide that all vowels are prohibited, thus making it very hard to write a coherent sentence. Fortunately the staff has enough sense not to use that solution.

For some, writing a coherent sentence is challenging enough as it is!

A sailor is always welcome at a Marine's house
Foul language is a requirement or I wouldn't know what you are trying to say!
And you have to want to watch MMA too.

We've posted many times about the difference between First Ammedment rights provided by the US Constitution and afforded to each citizen and the agreement APC users have accepted with respect to the forum Terms of Service. Simply stated, APC is a private forum and the First Ammendment does not apply here.

I know that sounds harsh, but as a private non-governement affilated forum we have that latitude, just as any other private media outlet does. That said, APC has a history of allowing a wide range of very unpopular topics to go to fruition (which is usually a figurative tightening death spiral) without interference. The forum terms of service are meant to keep a productive dialog about the piloting profession, and sometimes we remove content to maintain sight of that goal.

For users who enjoy religious discussions, political discussions, porn, or mean-spirited anonymous personal attacks we encourage them to find an online resource that meets their needs, there are many to choose from. APC, however, is not a resource for those topics or goals.

I don't think that sounds harsh at all; just true. It is refreshing to see a respect for private property and the rule of law.

One could argue that The Internet is a government invented and regulated entity and a significant part of the commons now and therefore subject to...um...oh nevermind.
