travel backpack ?
In the market for a travel backpack and wanted to ask the forum. I have narrowed it down to Northface, Timbuk2, 511 Tactical, and Osprey brands.
Purpose will be day trips with kids (with water bottles, bandaids, snack bars, extra change of clothes, etc) to park, museum, Disneyland, etc stuff. Also will be used for 2-3 day work related trips, as carry-on. Thoughts ? |
I'll get out my popcorn for the comments on pilots carrying backpacks. :D

....Whatever backpack you buy, just make sure you have enough money left over to buy these and complete the look:

PLEASE don't....
don't be Captain Rucksack don't wear it while walking down the isle and whack everyone in the face |
I think you all missed the point.

Get the Mountain Lumber by Northface, it comes with two shoulder straps, not just the one side shoulder in the picture. You will avoid the sweaty back and the weight in on your waist.
Have fun! Waistpacks, Hydration Waistpacks & Sports Waist Pack - The North Face |
This weeks captain had a black northface daypack. I liked it. It's just the right size for our last required jepp binder, iPad and headset with some room left over. Although we joke about the backpack RJ guy, I see tons of delta bubbas with a black backpack slung over a rollerboard. Why buy an airline only expensive bag from the flight station when you can have a multipurpose bag? With the hole in my current bag getting bigger each week I'll soon be joining the mainline pilot backpack brigade. :)

Perfect bag/backpack.

no this is not for carrying around into the cockpit, etc stuff aka "Generation Y RJ Pilot"
legit question, mostly gonna be for going to park with kids, museums, etc. I am age 41 not age 21 thanks ** secondary use will be work but what I mean is, I don't want a Dora the Explorer bag for off-duty because I can't take it on-duty. I want a good bag that can be used in both environments (if I am gonna be spending my money.....) |
This is too funny.

I have even seen some grey haired CAs with backpacks. What's the thoght on non-black suitcases? Sorry about the HJ.

As opposed to all the (insert Legacy/LCC/Cargo/Regional/Fractional pilots here) we've ALL seen at one time or another. To the OP, I don't take a backpack, or any other form of man purse to work as I'm able to get all my crap in my roller. But when I mountain bike/hike, I have an Opsrey brand top loader 33 litre daypack that has served me well. Has the water bladder slot, as well as external water bottle holders. It's proven to be a very tough/reliable piece of equipment and the "airscape" style spacing they design into the pack helps keep perspiration between my back and the pack to a minimum level. I know they make a variety of sizes and styles that could be what your looking for, in more conservative/professional colors (black/dark gray, etc) that won't look out of place attached to a roller. |

True. Going by the guys profile of Pt.91, his job probably entails showing up at the hangar/FBO, putting his stuff away, getting the plane ready, then greeting the peeps he's gonna fly that day. Then reverse the process at the end of the day/trip. Having little, if ANY time in airports commercial positioning in uniform whilst wearing a backpack.

Funny thing about backpacks and the young, entitled, 250-hour wonder, spiked hair, wrinkled shirt, sunglasses wearing RJ FO they are associated with. I have only seen one other person in their 20s with a backpack and he does not fit any of the other descriptions. On the other hand, about 50% of the time I see a United pilot step out of the crew room in EWR, they often are wearing a wrinkled uniform and are throwing a backpack their high school aged kid should have over their shoulder.
Where is the stereotypical young RJ FO I hear about all the time? |
If APC had been around 25 years ago all the manly men on here would have been bit(hin about the young punks with there roll aboards.
