My girlfriend is a veterinarian. When she was hospitalized, I cared for the animals she had been treating in her home, but then Hurricane Katrina arrived. I ended up evacuating a dog, 8 cats, and 5 kittens, all in one car. When I reached an area where cellphones worked, I called her and she said: "What? All I can hear is meowing and yowling."
I said: "That's not the cats ....that's me!"

To the original poster, I think your schedule is do-able if you are a cat person. I do however think that even small dogs are too needy physically and socially to pull off that kind of schedule.
If you have a two month absence due to a new job or something like that, well, you'll have to pony up to have a sitter come by and take care of your animals. Hopefully you have family/significant other to help. Any person can have events like that come up in life, I wouldn't let that stop me from getting an animal.
If you can find two cats that get along, they can keep each other company while you are gone for short periods. Food for thought.
From my experience as an animal shelter volunteer, there are *so* many animals who need a good home! Having a home with your schedule is better than living in a shelter or being euthenized!

I have an awesome dog that I set up a deal with some neighbors who are retired..
I drop him off when I go to work, he gets to play with the golden retriever who lives with the retired couple, and stays in there home.
I pick him up when I return home, I pay them a flat rate of $250 a month, which is very worth it as my dog seems pretty happy, the retired couple loves the extra income......this has worked out very well.
Good luck!

Always feed your monkey or he may just get surly and rip your face off. Photo taken in Nigeria, not mine.
