Gravity (movie)

Just saw Gravity today. I thought they did a real nice job. Has some moments of suspense, comedy, and thought they tried to make it realistic. Plus Sandra Bullock......

They gave it 4 stars on Roger Ebert dot com and it was good enough, but I was bored at times to be honest. What's new about this movie is a plot set in low earth orbit that has only two characters. The rest of it was a recycled disaster movie that we have seen many times. The 3D technique was used to nice effect as low earth orbit is visually cool, but random tools floating out of the 3D screen was kind of corny. As I get older I look more for character development in films than any number of awesome visuals, plot twists or tension. My own life has enough tension in it. Sandra Bullock did nothing new in this film, nor did the Clooney character. Bullock is not a very convincing scientist- she does feckless female heroines drawn into dynamic plots pretty well, but she does not have a lot of credulity as a scientific type. 3 (/4) stars.

Orbital rendezvous trivia: If you simply aim at your target and accelerate, you will just raise your orbit and fall behind. To catch another craft, you must briefly fire your retro rocket, which drops you to a lower (therefore faster) orbit. It's something like using a smaller radius turn to catch another turning fighter plane.
