I guess you girls haven't read the book.....just bashing it because you feel threatened. The good book doesn't put every girl into this category but it will tell you warning signs and how marriage is set up entirely for the female. Marriage is a LEGAL contract. The worst BUSINESS decision that you as a male can make. Not too many guys out there thay I know of who are divorced that cleaned out HER closet on the way out....I would even throw K-Fed in that group....ha ha

Ok girls (and some ladies) now flame away.......:D

jungle 12-13-2006 06:48 PM

I have had MANY 50+ year old guys and gals tell me they love their spouse, but God forbid if anything should happen to them, they won't be getting married again. The truth comes out at 3AM over the middle of the ocean.

First of all, it's ladies or women, not "girls" :p Second of all, the last thing in the world that is threatening to me is a book. Third of all, I refuse to partake in a battle of wits with someone who's unarmed... Sorry, darling.

learav8r 12-13-2006 06:55 PM

Changed it for you......

No, I haven't read the book, and really have no reason to read it. :) I have read summaries of it though, and it doesn't interest me. Why? Because marriage doesn't interest me at this time of my life, and I have a big stack of more interesting "to read" books next to my bed that I'm having a tough enough time to get to! - and I am a voracious reader and love to read! As far as marriage being the worst business decision one can make, I guess that depends on who entered the marriage with the most assets, right? There are ways to protect oneself against that as well. I'm not bashing it because I feel threatened, I don't feel threatened at all. I simply don't respect opinions or intellect that make broad generalizations.

You'd be equally amazed at the "truths" that I hear from long-married females!

jungle 12-13-2006 07:07 PM

Do tell. Tell it all sister.

Good reply......the only things I would suggest are:

-Fate is the Hunter (Gann)
-Flyboys (not the WWI version..the one about ChiChi Jima) (Bradley)
-Return of the Enola Gay (Tibbits)
-Hard Landing (Petzinger)

RockBottom 12-13-2006 07:56 PM

I'm a believer that 95% of people that get married are not cut out for each other. Once the infatuation dies and age starts to set in, complications start to rise. Man it gets messy by the time the couple is 40 and 50. By 55, the women are old hags, and the men are smelly geezers wanting to chase anything younger than 50.

jungle 12-13-2006 08:19 PM

My guess is that it will really suck for you at 55. Being a smelly old geezer and all.

I've got to tell you that that some of the most attractive and satisfying women in the world are 50+.

Ah, a gentleman with great taste!! I guess women are like wine to you, they improve with age! ;)

jungle 12-13-2006 08:36 PM

Some do and some don't, the vintage is never the sole determination.

let me see like:

-Barbara Walters
-Hillary Clinton
-Bea Arthur
-Liz Taylor

There might be a couple more I am missing.

Actually, you might want to read it before you make this kind of blanket condemnation statement. The book is about a certain KIND of woman and how to recognize her.

Its really no different than Oprah or Dr. Phil advising women on how to avoid abusive men.

Ok, I stand corrected. After all I haven't read it! Actually I was referring more to that ridiculous web site. The one that rants and raves about how evil American women are. On a side note, I bet it was created by an American man, the type who goes around calling other people America haters...LOL

But truly, I have no interest in reading it because it really is not a concern of mine, and like I said, I have things of more interest to me that I want to read.

Velocipede, did you retire the green man? Your new avatar is kind of trippy. :p

Actually those aren't the most sterling examples of what I am talking about, but your Mom is, what with all those Serviceman discounts she gave for all those years. Just kidding, but I think you can come up with some better examples if you try. Or you can just trash every woman over fifty and see what that does for you when you get a little older.

learav8r 12-14-2006 07:23 AM

what are you like 10 years old or something?

grow up.

www.nomarriage.com is good. it's necessary to warn men, most of whom are naive when it comes to relationships.

No, he's still in the files. He's a Raider fan from the Halloween weekend game. I thought maybe a Tlingit Orca would be nice for a change.

Pathetic web site.

They say the reason divorces cost so much is because they're worth it.

KZ1000Shaft 12-14-2006 05:16 PM

The only one to out ahead in a divorce is the lawyers.

LOL...are you a Raider fan? He definitely looks like a Raider fan! :p
Skygirl is a Niner fan, which reminds me, the Niner/Seahawk game tonight! I can pack and watch football at the same time. Are you in the Bay area?

Nope. However, I do love to watch the Raiders lose. I found him on SI.com and couldn't resist. Not in the Bay Area, either (except for layovers!). Seahawks need a win tonight...badly.

I'm no fan of the Raiders either. There is a big difference here between Raider and Niner fans. I like Seattle (the city) a lot, but you know I have to cheer on my homies! Good luck - may the best team win!

Velocipede 12-14-2006 06:40 PM

The difference between 49er fans and Raider fans is like the difference between Champagne with Caviar and NightTrain while dumpster diving.

Classy vs. classless.

Me too. Let's see if we can get this thread back in the direction that I think Sir James intended. Just in case I ever decide to hook up with a pilot, I should know why so many of them are getting divorced lately.

their soon to be ex-wives want as much as they could get in alimony before the pay cut became permanent. also, i'm sure being gone for days at a time don't help.

of course that's helped my parents marriage. Dad's a firefighter, so he's home just long enough to start pi$$ing mom off, then he leaves. by the time he's home, she's just happy to see him again.

been an amusing cycle to watch for the last 27 years of my life

OldAg84 12-15-2006 12:25 PM

Never been divorced- don't intend to. In my life, I've observed a few marriages and divorces. A couple of global observations seem consistent.

CAVEATS-
1. One never knows the whole story.
&
2. There are always two sides to every story.

That said, it seems:

1. That one of the parties is either a nutjob or an a55hole. You pick the gender, but my gender choice is pretty specific and again, fairly consisitent.

2. Substance abuse- both legal and potentially illegal; often plays a part.

3. Selfishness and lack of "give" seem prominent- "he/she always...." Like in anything, little problems ignored tend to grow. The fire you could've easily put out a while ago, well.... Should a married guy play softball-sure. Should he play 3-4 nights a week? You get the picture.

4. Lack of communication skills.

5. Control issues.

6. Unreal expectations- If I didn't have my wife, would I want to be married to a 23 year-old nymphomaniac model? Probably. Is my spouse trending that way- no. But I'm not Brad Pitt either. Actually, I'm not even a 30 pound overweight Brad Pitt- NO WAIT! I'm sorry, that statement is half right.

7. Space- reasonable time away from each other is good.

It's true love is blind- so you can't tell people in love anything. A good friend of mine married a very high maintenence battleaxe. Ironically, I get along with her great. As he says, "I'm glad when you visit because you deflect attention from me!" But prior to the marriage, several parties (not me) try to tell him to not do it. In any case, they've been at it for 17 years. So something must be working.

Again, these are just my observations.

Somewhat true. There are really 3 sides to every story..His, hers and the truth!!! :D

What's the point of getting married? ... Just find an nice girl, buy her a house and be done with it! Why go through all the drama in the middle.

What and miss out on that special machine the court wheels in at your final divorce hearing?

marriage and work are the 2 most evil inventions that humanity produced.
women and men are not meant to live all the life with one person.
unfortunately i made the mistake too.
