Airline Pilot Arrested Smuggling Drugs Back to U.S. | BuzzPoBuzzPo
"Earlier this week, Stanley Rafael Hill, 49, from McKinney, TX gave “flying high” a whole new meaning! Hill was arrested for smuggling drugs back into the U.S.
What makes this story unique though, is Hill works as an airline pilot. Hill is allegedly employed by the regional airline Shuttle America flying the Embraer 170, though this has not been confirmed by Shuttle America officially.
Hill apparently intentionally ingested 62 rubber balloons of cocaine weighing less than 200 grams, before boarding his flight. It left Columbia with Hill riding in the cabin as a “non-revenue pass traveler” bound for Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and upon arrival, Hill became extremely ill. He was rushed to Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital in Humble, where he was treated for the cocaine ingestion.
Hill has been charged with felony possession with intent to distribute, and bail was set at $500,000. Hill was type rated to fly the Embraer 135/145, Embraer 170/190, and the Boeing 737.
It’s hard to speculate what causes an airline pilot to become a drug mule for the Columbian Cartel, but it’s no longer any secret how poorly regional airline pilots are compensated. With newly hired first officers qualifying for food stamps in any of the 50 states, I personally know several that can’t even afford a roof over their own heads. Obviously, this is no excuse to ever resort to felonious criminal activity, but one has to wonder what Hill’s motive for risking his life really was."
