Yes it was covered in this thread several times. The virus is (I guess was is more appropriate) extremely rare in the US but fairly prevalent in Central America. For some reason wired neglected to mention that.

Sorry I can't find any scientific literature that indicates that, there have been outbreaks in Japan, France, Italy, the Philippines, the Netherlands and Thailand in recent years.
