I get the protocols after 9/11, but still that means being NORDO for awhile. Plus now with all the crazies setting fire to centers, how do WE know YOUR THERE. Just so you know, we have a lot of stuff going on too at times, and are not hanging on every word ATC says. Sometimes we are even on a "land line":)

Astrocity! This is great!

I don't see that happening often. What I do see is when you try and speak someone else keys the mic at the same time. Simply no way tp prevent that.
I do wish controllers would ride more on the jumpseats. I think some would be more tolerant if they did. Often I have the controller talking at the same time a flight attendant is calling and dispatch is chiming the ACARS or we are talking to ramp. Some controllers get Irate if you don't answer ASAP yet often ignore our calls and respond that they were on the landline. It works both ways

Does the call sign usually begin with "Amer" and end like "can"? Miami Center perhaps?

Those of us who do wait find this just as annoying. Surprised it took so long for a controller to finally say something!

I was going to say the same thing. But since you already did, thanks! One of my student pilots long ago was a veteran controller. He told me learning to fly made him a much "nicer" controller.

But I've been doing this long enough now to hear plenty of carelessness on both sides of the microphone, and I don't think an adversarial pilots vs. controllers attitude is going to get us anywhere. We're all on the same team (except for SWA:)), and I think most of us understand that.

I doubt it. The proper callsign is "MERICAN".

"What do you need?". The controllers will tell you what they want, you don't need to offer it to them. Jeez. The most annoying response to "say speed"

Depends, a lesser know dialect that spreads itself across airlines would, in that case, use the vernacular of "Americans"

All those jimmys flying around:

There are a lot of tangents that we could discuss that pilots and controllers do that raise our eyebrows. I would bet though that every pilot was taught that when changing frequencies to pause and make sure you are not interrupting before checking in.
