What about Sioux City? That was an uncontained failure and caused lots of death.

Last week saw an astonishing moment of frankness from the A380’s biggest customer. Tim Clark, President of Emirates, told Bloomberg that not only had discussions on a new re-engined A380neo version of Airbus’s 525-seat jet “kind of lapsed,” but that his “main concern is that they stop producing the plane.”

This was the first intimation that sudden death is a possibility for the troubled super jumbo. And the numbers highlight this risk....

What are your thoughts these days about the prospects of the A380?

Nonsequitur.

They are talking about engine parts breeching the cabin and killing pax. The injuries and deaths from 232 had nothing to do with engine parts hitting passengers.

It seems unlikely they'll ever get close to breaking even, based on what they said the development cost was.

They will absolutely never break even. The question is can they deliver the remaining airframes they've sold without losing money on the production. At this point even that's a struggle, so they are essentially paying for the privilege of delivering airplanes, plus they incur liability risk with each plane flying.

The only think keeping it alive now is probably Euro-pride and the fear of leaving EK flapping in the breeze...which would not reflect well on the airbus brand as a whole.
