Drone almost hits medical helicopter carrying patient to Fresno hospital

A drone nearly collided Wednesday with a medical helicopter that was taking a snake-bite victim to a Fresno hospital, authorities said.

The helicopter was flying 1,000 feet above the ground about 1 p.m., when the pilot spotted a large drone in its flight path, said Todd Valeri, whose company operates the SkyLife Air Medical chopper.

The pilot swiftly turned to avoid the drone, missing a potential catastrophe by about 20 feet, he said.

Some jackass is going to get good people killed. I feel like I'm already in mourning, knowing it's coming.

F'n FAA! "We're not happy until you're unhappy"

I'll say it again...

In addition to any FAA regulations that are passed, we need to pass a law forcing regulations re: drones that requires 5 things:

1) a VIN # secured to each drone just like that found on any automobile

2) The establishment of a national database for said VIN #'s and related information

3) the purchase AND re-sale(s) of any drone must be registered with the FAA using said VIN # and the name of the buyer AND operator (if different from the buyer)

4) If a drone gets lost or stolen, the owner MUST inform law enforcement AND the FAA as soon as it's theft or loss is known under penalty of law (to include jail time and heavy fines)

5) Heavy penalties for anyone who can be shown to have attempted to evade/avoid this law in any way
Right now, there is ZERO accountability for the use of drones. Right now, if one causes an accident that gets people hurt or killed, law enforcement has no way of tracking down the perpetrators.

I am so sad knowing good people have to die before something is done. Sucks so bad!!!!!!!!!

Aircraft pilots are reporting a dramatic increase in drone sightings to the Federal Aviation Administration, with the number on pace to quadruple for the year, increasing concerns of a potentially dangerous collision.

On Sunday, four airline crews reported seeing drones while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey at 2,000 to 3,000 feet in the air. All landed safely without taking evasive action.

Pilots from a variety of aircraft reported 650 drone sightings this year through Aug. 9, compared with 238 sightings in all of 2014, the FAA announced Thursday.

"The legislature in Connecticut (recently) addressed a number of questions with drones, mostly around how law enforcement was going to use drones. It is a gray area, and it's caught the legislature flatfooted," the chief said of the weaponized drone.

"It appears to be a case of technology surpassing current legislation."

15Aug saw a fixed-wing drone in the BOG ATA just after takeoff. Flew by it..about 800' away at closest.
