More Eco-Responsible Cleaning for FedEx Aircraft

I tried googling the subject of the effect of a clean airframe surface on aerodynamic efficiency- I didn't come up with a lot of scientific information.

Anyone have a good source on the topic or personal experience?

Didn't FredEX try something like that with a DC-10 about 20some-odd yrs ago?
Something about waxing one and the fuel savings to labor payoff wasn't worth it.

Many years ago, an old WWII pilot told a group of us UPT students that he kept his P-51 clean and waxed. Said it gave him a little extra speed and range.

I guess there is a reason why high performance glider planes are washed after every flight day and quite often can clean the leading edge from bugs during the flight as well.
